Before packing a single box, go through each room and do a merciless purge of unused or unnecessary items. You'll have less to pack, less to move, and less to unpack - and you'll start in your new space with a clean slate!

Start packing early! Start with offseason items you wont miss as well as books and other "once-in-a-while items. When it's finally time to move you'll already have things ready to go and less to stress about.

For hanging clothes, you can keep them on the hangers and just wrap a large lawn trash bag around a group of them. Tie the bag off and you can either pack them in boxes as is or keep them hanging during the move.
For jewelry, you can string your necklaces through straws or toilet paper rolls to prevent them from getting tangled
For shoes, you can pack socks into them to help hold their shape.

This may seem basic, but make sure and label your boxes for the room they are destined for and a brief description of the contents. It will help both you and the movers when you arrive.

Take lots of pictures of your old and new place. If there is a security deposit involved you want pictures to prove how you left things. Take pictures of any expensive items so you have proof for insurance if something gets damaged in the move.

Keep an essentials box with you throughout the move. This should include a change of clothes, toiletries, medications, some toys for the kids, bed sheets, shower curtain, and some cleaning supplies. This way you are covered just in case something happens and your things get delayed or lost on the way.
